Our
Story
In the spring of 2024, Katie acquired RiverRAT Barn Hunt Club, a local club that has been dormant for some time. To support the growth of the exciting sport we will be hosting events, classes, and workshops on the farm! Barn hunt is a wonderful introductory sport for new teams wanting to explore the world of dog sports, or even just trying something new. The sport can teach you a lot about your dog's communication style and body language. It is also a great way to build confidence and independence in your dog through learning a new skill. We encourage dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds/mixes to try it out!
The game combines the dog's instincts, drive, teamwork, and fun! The objective of the sport is that the dog must identify the location of a hidden rat placed somewhere amongst hay bales, and tell the handler where. The dog must also go through a level-appropriate tunnel constructed out of hay bales, and climb up onto at least one bale. It is incredibly important to note that all rats are protected in well-constructed tubes. These rats are our pets, they are cared for with the highest level of respect and consideration. Under no circumstances will a dog ever experience nose-to-nose contact with our rats.
We enjoy hosting casual drop-in sessions as well as structured classes. If you are interested in learning more or joining our antics please check out RiverRAT Barn Hunt on Facebook! Please also check out the Barn Hunt Association's website for the rule books, trial and workshop information, and how to get involved in the sport!
History: "Barn Hunt® is based on the hunting and teamwork skills historically used by Ratcatchers and their dogs who traveled the countryside ridding farms of vermin, thus helping to conserve and preserve food grains and protect inhabitants from disease."-Barn Hunt Competitor's Rulebook 2022.
